Week 4

Super sentence winners:

Year 2 have been going up to 2CN for PSHE lessons this half term and Year 1 have been having their lesson with me in class. This is to ensure that all PSHE content is delivered to the children at the correct time on their school journey. In Year 1 we were thinking about harmful and non-harmful substances, what was safe to put in our bodies or not. We role played a few scenarios where the children saw others ‘drinking’ harmful substances and acting out what they would say or do. It was a fun, practical lesson and the children have a great understanding of safe and non safe items.

Space dome visit on Friday was amazing. This is part of out Lunar Landing topic and the children were so excited to learn we were going inside this! Ask the children about it being inside the space dome!

Week 3

Our super sentence winners for this week!

Computing this half term is all about taking photos. The children will be expert photographers by February half term. We have practiced focussing the camera, setting up the shot, deciding whether to use portrait or landscape, choosing the best subject and even thought about the effect that light has on photos.

In DT the children were in pairs and started to bring their designs for their space buggies together. They each designed their own and then chose the best bits to add to the joint plan!

Week 2

Another great week in the bag for class 1/2B. The children are tasked with a short writing starter each morning and compete with each other for a chance to wear the crown! The children challenge themselves with sentence composition and with spelling. It’s a great way for the children to showcase their work and to feel proud of themselves!

Our super sentence champions this week:

In RE this week we did some drama with some of the children acting out a passage from the bible. We spoke about Christians believing that Jesus brought good news and what this would mean for the people of Earth.

Spring 1 – Week 1

It was great welcoming the children back after the Christmas holidays. We had a strong start to 2026 and hope the enthusiasm lasts through this cold and dark half term!

Our super sentence winners this week:

Year 1 took our class iPad around school with Ms Hirst as part of our computing unit. They were tasked with taking pictures of people, buildings, from a distance, close up, action shots, and selfies! This linked with what we have been learning about technology and the uses of different pieces of IT.

In RE we started the unit off with a jigsaw. A key piece of learning for this half term was chopped up and the children had to put it back together! It was a lovely team task and one the children enjoyed doing.

Autumn 2 – Week 1

It was so lovely being back at school this week and seeing all of the children. We worked in groups to fill in a table on IT. We have learnt that this means ‘information technology’ and have sorted different household/office objects into IT and not IT.

We have moved on in T4W and our new model text is called ‘The Papaya that Spoke’. We had a real papaya in class that we chopped up and tasted together. Some children really enjoyed it, while others definitely did not!

Week 8

We have finally made it to the end of our first half term! We have been so busy getting used to our new routines as a mixed class but it has gone amazingly and the children are really settled and loving our new class. Rio brought in two fun science experiments he had been doing at home to show us!

As an end of half term treat we had been looking forward my dog, Obi, coming in to visit. He loved coming into year 1 a few years ago when I was teaching in there and the children were asking lots about him. He loves to play fetch and chase a tennis ball which the children thought was great. They took it in turns to throw his ball for him and we even did some races on the playground. Obviously Obi won them all but the children did great running too!

We have been finishing off our art project by adding lead printing on the top of our crayons and paint. The art work is a spider web and is inspired by the book the Spider Weaver. We have yet to add a sewing stitch to our art work – this is something that the children are excited but nervous about!

Week 7

This week Miss Whiteley had arranged for a travelling theatre company to perform for us. The show was about little Vikings and all parts were played by the three actors (and puppets/props). The children were mesmerised by the performance and thought it was hilarious! They sat so beautifully in the dance hall.

Next up this week was a Year 2 growing project, led by Mrs Whittaker and external company leader – Rachel. The year 2 children are taking part in a sustainable growing project and have been preparing the beds ready for planting, and even did some autumn/winter planting of vegetables such as rainbow chard and mizuna.

To finish off this exciting week we all went on a local walk around Alwoodley. We took a map and a tick list to make sure we were noticing things around us. We saw lots of schools, playgrounds, roads, traffic lights, zebra crossings and more!

Week 6

This week in PSHE we have been looking at safety at home and what could be a danger inside our homes. The children played an interactive game where they had to identify all dangers in each room of the house.

We have been loving our library sessions on a Wednesday with Miss Whiteley. The children are enjoying using the pods sensibly and practicing looking after the books they choose.

In Science we have been working well with our talk partners to discuss our unit ‘materials’. We also took part in a science experiment with materials where we tested them out to see which one was the most waterproof. We poured water on plastic, cardboard, paper, fabric and wood.

Week 5

This week we have been very practical in our RE lessons and have been thinking about the different ways Christians and Muslims can pray. We have been learning about Christianity and Islam this half term and the children are really interested in noticing the similarities and differences between these religions.

We have also loved being hands on in Geography creating our own cities. We had our Year 2 children working on small maps of our local area, building on their knowledge of maps and our local area. Our Year 1 children worked together to put together a floor map.

Week 4

We have had such a busy week – we have hardly stopped!

Tuesday we had our amazing forest school day with Mrs Whittaker. The weather was great and the activities we did were fantastic.

After the excitement of our forest schools day, we had a normal day in class followed by our class trip to Leeds!
