Maths Maths Maths

This week for one of our provision challenges we have been continuing to practice using the greater than, less than and equals to signs. The children used Numicon to complete the challenge then took a photo using the ipad to show they had completed it. As you can see George could tell me that 1 is less than 3, 10 is greater than 8 and 6 is equal to 6.

We also made the most a sunny day this week and got outside to do some of our Maths work. We used practical resources such as dice, number lines and chalk to make number tracks, find one more and one less and numbers that are greater than and fewer than another number. What a great, hands on way to help with our learning and a great way you could try some Maths at home too!

A Special Visitor

We were very excited in 1BN to welcome a very special visitor, Olive. Olive is Mrs Barnett’s new puppy and she is a Labrador. The children all did a great job of being caring and gentle with Olive and we hope that she visits again soon.

We have had a really challenging week in Maths learning about less than, greater than and equal to. The children are really good at saying if one number is greater than or less than another number but have found remembering the < and > symbols a bit trickier though.

Sam’s Safari

Today we welcomed the amazing Sam’s Safari into Year 1 and we all had a great time learning about all the different animals in such a hands on way. We saw a stick insect, leaf insect, salamander, skink, millipede, snake, tortoise, chinchilla and armadillo. Sam told us where in the world these animals are from and gave us lots of information such as if they were a mammal, reptile or amphibian, what they like to eat and how long they live for. The children were very brave and had a go at holding or stroking these animals. They were also really gentle with them. A huge thank you to Sam’s Safari for such a wonderful experience!

Week 3

We cannot believe that we are already at the end of week 3 and what a busy week it has been! This week we have been busy learning 1 more in Maths, creating animal prints using ink and rollers in Art and learning the story of creation with Mrs Barnett in RE. We are so excited as Sam’s Safari are coming into school next week with lots of different animals so come back to the blog next week to see some photos of that.

Welcome to 1BN

We have had a wonderful week welcoming all the children into 1BN after the summer holiday, they have all settled in really well and are quickly picking up the rules and routines of the day. The children have been spending time this week thinking about our value of Respect and our school rules ‘Respect yourself, respect each other and respect our school.’ They have also spent time thinking about our school vision ‘We work towards a world where we love, learn and flourish.’ We have spent lots of time in our areas of provision, learning through play and doing an amazing job at tidy up time.

And that’s a wrap!

Wow, the end of year 1! And what a year it has been! We have rounded off the year by testing the boats that we made in DT. The children used a rubber band and small lolly stick to make a propeller and, once they had worked out which way to twist it to make it go forwards, the boats moved quickly across the water. Most of the children took part in Thursdays splashdown and had great fun on the inflatables, getting very wet from all the water pistols. Such a great way to finish a brilliant year. Good luck in Year 2, we will really miss you.

Filey Trip

1BN had an amazing time on our trip to Filey. The children enjoyed singing and playing games with their friends during the coach journey and before we knew it, we were there. We walked down the hill, catching that first exciting glimpse of the sea, and made our way onto the beach. After such a long journey we were all ready for our lunch and then we were straight onto playing in the sand, digging holes and building sandcastles. We had a short walk down to the sea, as the tide was on the way out, but enjoyed having a paddle and some of us ended up rather wet. The tide had left some interesting things to discover on its way out and lots of us found seaweed, shells, and even small crabs or crab claws.

Unfortunately, a downpour cut our time on the beach short so we had a quick change into some dry clothes and had a walk along the beach to the lifeboat station. When we arrived this was closed but a very kind lady opened it up so that we could have a look at the boats. The thought of enjoying a delicious ice cream helped us with the walk back along the beach then it was back up the hill to head home but not before we managed a quick go at the playground. What a busy and amazing day, even the rain could not dampen our excitement! A huge thank you to the parents who came along to help, without you trips like this would not be possible.

Months of the Year

Today in Maths 1BN have been learning about the months of the year. The children could tell me that there are 12 months in a year and could name the months in the correct order. During carpet time, we asked our partner questions such as ‘which month comes after January?’ and ‘which month is before September?’ The children found it a lot trickier to remember the number of days that each month has. They really enjoyed singing this months of the year song, why not have a go at home?
